The refs could easily have beaten us this evening. Honestly I expected a lot more home cooking.

So, swept K-state this year, and swept OU this year. Everyone else has been beatable, except for Iowa State. Bodes well for the tournament.

Agreed. He needed some time to find his rhythm. I think he's found it.

We don't normally win games where our second half production is only half of the first half's.

Hard to win a Big 12 game shooting 30 percent. Thank Huggs and Kona Tay for that one.

1) there is no possible way we jump Nova. We may not even jump MSU. I'm fine with that. The higher the ranking, the higher the pressure on 18 to 20 year old kids.

2) it's January. If we keep taking care of business, the rankings will take care of themselves. March is what matters.

3) the likelihood of avoiding a meltdown like every other top ten team has suffered in the past week or two is virtually nil. We've had a great run; I'm enjoying the heck out of it and I hope it continues. The thing that matters is how we respond to that meltdown if/when it comes. Let's see what Duke, MSU, ASU, and Xavier do this week.

ESPN highlights tonight show lots of Carter toying with Trae Young. And it's Jevon getting the love, not just Bob Huggins' press as usual. Plus, Teddy Buckets. It's a great day to be a Mountaineer.

Plus, Virginia's win over the Tarheels made our win look in Charlottesville look a little better. And since a) I have little love for Duke partly because b) I went to NC State back in the Valvano national championship days, it was a really good day to be a college basketball fan with my particular allegiances. It's a rare and glorious day both Duke and UNC go down.

Don't know if he's a great fit for our system or not--but if he WAS ours, I'd love to see what would happen if Huggs had a chance to develop him for 3 years or so. He's got speed, lots of raw talent, he does spread the ball around, and he has pretty good BB IQ for a kid at the very beginning of his career.

Even Bender stepped up tonight. Konate keeps getting better. And Teddy Allen--wow. I hope we get to keep him for four years. I am really excited for what the next few years will bring us. This is as deep as I can remember us being in skill players, and this is BEFORE we get Ahmad back.

I'd sure like to see us finish strong for a change, rather than letting them back in the game halfway through the 2nd half as usual. Note to team: It's not necessary for the game to be close to be enjoyable for the fans! Time for an old-fashioned blowout.

Regardless of how this game shakes out, it's refreshing to see the sports media actually seem excited about an upcoming WVU game AND give us respect. I really like the identity Huggs has built for us, as a uniquely scrappy team that absolutely gets in the heads of our opponents.

Speaking of ten years ago, yesterday was the ten year anniversary of the last time we beat Oklahoma. Who knows, it could happen again.

And today is my ten year WMITC anniversary. Looks like I average about 127 posts a year. Looking forward to the next ten with a somewhat more wieldy interface.

There were two related camps of Rich Rod haters ten years ago. Many hated him because he was a slimeball, and others hated him because he was a disloyal slimeball. I didn't necessarily hate him, but it was awkward because I had just moved to Ann Arbor, right before he did. I thought it was important that he fail, bigly and publicly. And he did. I was satisfied, even though I heard way too many hillbilly jokes in an area that owes much of its cultural flavor to the Appalachian outmigration that staffed its mills and factories for decades. But I was willing to wish him well from that point forward, because at root he IS one of us.

The problem, however, remains HIS root. He is still a slimeball.

In case no one noticed, sexual assault allegations are finally getting the attention they merit. Rich Rod is an enormous Title IX liability to any school that hires him. He's done.

We knew ALL of this stuff about him ten years ago. Think of what has changed for us in the meantime. We are miles ahead of where we were as a program, with better facilities, professional AD leadership, and more money playing in the big leagues. Rich spent that same ten years as a one trick pony, taking his spread option act to Michigan and then Arizona and finding extremely limited success with it, and no doubt continuing to bone cheerleaders along the way like he did here.

I like looking at the end of the year stats for trends that help explain our season. It seemed to me that our D-line was very weak compared to last year. The stats bear that out in terms of total tackles contributed by the 4 key members of the D-line:

WVU D line 2017: Donahue 40 tackles, Shuler 37 tackles, Rose 24 tackles, McDougle 23 tackles

WVU D line 2016: Darrien Howard 66 tackles, Nwachuku 40 tackles, Shuler 34 tackles, Brown 34 tackles

Brief summary: 2016 174 tackles, 2017 124 tackles.

Huge different at the NT position.

That's an interesting analysis. At first blush, the assumption to me is that our D Line was otherwise occupied and so the LB's and Safeties had to make stops instead and one would think that would mean that the other teams were getting more yards per carry up the middle. Though I suppose it could mean teams chose to run outside more which would skew the numbers toward more tackles for LB's and Safeties or that teams threw on us more and ran less or that teams were using less hurry up and ran fewer plays in 2017.

Not meaning to put you on the spot, but do you know anything about any of these other numbers? That's 29% fewer tackles made by linemen, which is a huge difference. My interest is piqued.

I knew we'd miss Noble and Howard but damn.

To make an accurate comparison you need to know how many total plays were defended each year, and thus calculate a tackle rate. But it doesn't seem likely we defended fewer plays this year.

I hated to see us ranked 7th. Remember what happened last year every time we were ranked 7th? Guaranteed loss.

I was never a Holgerson supporter but at this time I don't see anyone that could have done better. We was rebuilding both Offensive and Defensive lines linebacker core and had youth at corner. Without the receiving corp and Grier we would have been looking at a 4 or 5 win season.

My prediction for this year was 7-5, based mainly on the fact that we had to replace almost three quarters of last year's production--pretty much one of the worst rebuilding situations in all D-1. The bowl game was certainly a disappointment but overall the season could have gone a lot worse for us. With a healthy Grier we beat Texas but I don't know if he'd have had an answer for Utah.

I think one of the best maturation stories this year was Holgorsen himself. You'd think he'd been studying eastern philosophy, or doing mindfulness training, or something during the offseason last year. Having Spavital certainly helped, but he was the picture of zenlike calm on the sidelines this year.
