So, who's our backup QB now?

Good to hear from you again, EERCrazy. I hope you (or anyone else) doesn't think I was advocating for staying in the AAC Conference as opposed to being in the Big 12, because that was never an option for me and I'm sure I said as much back in that other thread.

I admit I don't like being 7-5 as much as I liked being 11-1, but I DO like playing real football against real teams and not slogging it out on a Friday night with Jeff Mullen's offense against the likes of UConn or Rutgers.

And as I expected, we're basically a 7 or 8 win team most years and that's better than being left off the field entirely. I just think we need to accept the reality of that fact and not cry that the sky is falling if we don't win 10 games.

For the most part, Big 12 games have been highly entertaining and we've won more than we've lost. This year we hit a wall offensively before Grier drove his finger into the ground, but we're still better than half the league.

And you're absolutely right about the impact of the money on the university. Hell, it turned me into a WVU baseball fan after decades of not giving a shit.

If you don't believe me, check out Saturday's Big 12 scores. TCU, Texas, Kansas State and Iowa State all won games with freshman QBs who were not starters at the beginning of the year.

Our guy has been around for what, three years?

Who's getting the better players?

If you went back through the "conference armageddon" thread you'd find a post in which someone (OK, it was me) asked a question that went something like this:

"Would you rather dominate the Big East every year and play in the Belk Bowl or be in the middle of the pack in the SEC and go 8-4 or 7-5 (or worse) every year?"

At the time, the Big East was starting to crumble and we thought we were going to the SEC, and the response here on the Couch was almost universal: "Hell yeah, we'd rather be 7-5 in the SEC than 10-2 in the Big East."

Well, friends, we DID get out of the Big Least and we DID join a big boys conference -- just not the SEC -- and we DO have a good chance to go 8-4 or 7-5 (or worse) just about every year.

We got what we said we wanted, and now that we have it, it doesn't look so shiny any more.

I don't care who our coach is, unless he can miraculously find a way to out-recruit the Texas and Oklahoma schools for the top talent in Texas (or the Florida schools in Florida or Ohio State in Ohio, etc.) we're not going to win the Big 12.

And there's no use complaining because we didn't. It gets tiring after a while.

As I posted elsewhere, coaches are always telling players to step up and "make plays" to win games. Grier was trying to "make a play" and suffered a freak injury.

I've seen hundreds of players do the same thing and score touchdowns and none of them broke a finger. I don't fault Will for trying to score, considering how little we've done it recently.

I notice we're playing Wheeling Jesuit later in the year (exhibition). They'll probably give us a better game.

Not happy with Spav. We have a stud pocket passer QB. Why put him in harms way with a bootleg on 3rd and inches? The worst scenario happened and now we get to play Oklahoma with our JV team.

Sadly, Crawford scored easily on the play. He just didn't have the ball.

That said, coaches tell players to go out and make plays to win games. Grier was trying to make a play. I won't fault him for that. It was a freak injury.

My 2 cents:

1. We can't run the ball for shit.

2. Their backup QB is better than ours.

If the offense can't win it maybe the defense can.

My 2 cents:

1. I wasn't home and had to watch parts of it on my phone.

2. That's probably a good thing.

Quick! Somebody call Morgantown. I think our offense missed the flight.

He's only been there 10 years, you figure he could run an offense by now.

Good one.

My 2 cents:

1. When you gain 524 yards and your QB is 20 for 25 and you have a 100-yard rusher, you're supposed to win...but it's supposed to be easier than this.

2. I knew we were looking for trouble by leaving points on the field, twice trading TDs for FGs and missing one FG in the first half.

3. How does this offense not score in the second half?

4. I still like ugly wins better than losing.

OK, that's 4 cents.
