I like looking at the end of the year stats for trends that help explain our season. It seemed to me that our D-line was very weak compared to last year. The stats bear that out in terms of total tackles contributed by the 4 key members of the D-line:

WVU D line 2017: Donahue 40 tackles, Shuler 37 tackles, Rose 24 tackles, McDougle 23 tackles

WVU D line 2016: Darrien Howard 66 tackles, Nwachuku 40 tackles, Shuler 34 tackles, Brown 34 tackles

Brief summary: 2016 174 tackles, 2017 124 tackles.

Huge different at the NT position.

Justin was a good player, enjoying watching him play. But in terms of his legacy, and where he ranks in all-time WVU best RBs, consider this amazing stat:

He scored a total of 3 TDs in 2 seasons against Big 12 teams not named Kansas.

Okay, what about losing to Oklahoma every year in Big 12 play? Only beating Kansas State twice? Losing to Kansas? Losing to any team with a pulse? Oklahoma scoring on 6 consecutive possessions? This defense is far worse than 2012, our 4-8 season, even worse that year in the bug east where we went 3-8 in 2001

I don't post here that often, but this one requires a quick comment.

The above is literally the stupidest thing I have read on this board in like 10 years. Literally the stupidest. Congratulations on this monumentally stupid post.

It is actually pretty hard to have a lot of wins against teams that finish within the top 25. By definition, beating that team makes it MUCH less likely they will be ranked. For example, if we beat Virginia Tech they probably wouldn't be ranked right now.

If Iowa State or Kansas State win a bowl game they still could be ranked at the end of the year.

Interesting stat. Crawford only has 3 rushing TDs in career in Big 12 games not against Kansas.

Can't believe so much negativity on the board tonight. Quite simple - we lost our most indispensable player early on in a game where he was particularly indispensable.

The Texas defensive front had a clear advantage over our offensive line. I was aware of this, I anticipated a weaker run game, but figured we would make up for it in the pass game because of Grier. This was exactly what was playing out until the injury. White dropped a perfect deep pass on a scramble, then the injury happened at the goal line when we were looking to go up 7-0 (and should have been more). There is no question in my mind we would have won this game with Grier in there.

I thought our defense was OK, pretty much what I expected. Play calling could have been better, but it was pretty much what I expected and was probably enough to win with Grier in the game.

I really wasn't that upset that we lost, given the circumstances. After the injury, I texted my very good friend (a Texas fan) and told him that Texas would likely win. He respects WVU, but agreed with this assessment. After the game he texted me that Texas wouldn't have won with Grier in there.

Bottom line, the analysis is simple. WVU is a good program, coaches are fine, defensive scheme is fine, we simply lost because we lost our most indispensable player. Texas has some elite players and there would be few teams favored to beat them after a sudden in-game loss of their starting QB (imagine OSU without Randolph, USC without Darnold, etc etc).

So I am not upset with this specific loss at all. Way more upset that Grier is nearly for sure lost for the bowl game.

Makes you respect Skylar Howard, and his remarkable physical dependability, a little more. Football seasons are remarkably fragile.

And I will say that this was the worst effort by a Huggins team for 3+ years.

There are no Phillips or Paiges hiding on this roster.

I am so mad at Macon and Ahmad.

Carter - below average for him, still had 7 assists

Miles - just horrible game for him, was expecting so much out of his senior year

Harris - only shoots 3s

West - only shoots 3s

Konate - I thought he played best of anyone, which is saying something. Had 4 blocks felt like 6 or 7.

Bolden - can shoot, ball handling was atrocious

Bender - just horrible, I think worse than Noreen. zero athletic ability

Allen - could touch ball for 2 seconds without reflexively shooting

- Overall Texas A&M was 2 or 3 times more athletic than us, and probably each of the players could shoot better than our players.

It really did feel like an Eron Harris/Terry Henderson team.

The level of competition has increased, and in particular the quality of big men has increased. Statistically, our nosedive correlates with very little production out of our big men. I feared we wouldn't miss Williams much until we got into the Big 12 slate.

Total last 3 games:

Watkins: 7 points, 10 rebounds, 2 TOs
Macon: 15 points, 7 rebounds, 3 TOs
Konate: 7 points, 5 rebounds, 6 TOs

AND

AHMAD: 13 points, 9 rebounds, 10 TOs

We are seeing major deficiencies in our Big Men. Guard play has still been great. Rebounding leaders last 3 games: KSU (Carter), Oklahoma (Carter), Texas (Carter/Philip)/.

BTW - We lose to Texas without Carter. He is playing lights out recently.

So I think we are starting to miss Williams, and I agree we are getting fatigued and the press just doesn't work when you are fatigued.

I think we will turn things around but we have to see Ahmad get back into form, and one of Macon/Watkins/Konate needs to step up.

What are everyone's parking suggestions for the BYU game? Seems hard to find a ticket at the stadium.

Shell will be great at what he does best - tough yards. I predict 10+ rushing TDs for him but <1000 yards.

Breakout Star (Offense): White - I expect him to lead team in receiving

Breakout Star (Defense): White - I am thinking Robert Sands here

Shell with 3 consecutive carries inside the 10, bangs it in on 3rd down from the 1.

Excellent post by GONZOeer.

That is why ESPN FPI lists us as having an 80.8% chance of winning this game.

Overall depth chart looks good, should have significant depth at several positions when Pankey and Preston are back. What concerns me most when I look this over is the second team defensive line - virtual unknowns.

I personally think we will go 7.6 - 4.4 and have an 82% chance to beat Kansas State at home.

My predictions actually perfectly coincide with the ESPN FPI predictions (see link above).

Following this site for a long time from afar. Don't know anything about gambling but will agree this site is beginning to suck.

What sites would you guys (and gals) recommend to get real info about the Mounties and real discussions?

Looking for a new site to frequent.
