It's sandwiched between TN and NC State, and YSU is typically one of the better FCS teams. I expect WVU to win, but not in impressive fashion. I also predict that this game will be broadcast on AT&T SportsNet (formerly ROOT Sports).

West Virginia vs. Tennessee
Despite not being all that far apart in the college football matchup world – around 400 miles – this is the first ever meeting. The Jeremy Pruitt era starts out at Tennessee, but this needs to be a big statement from a good West Virginia team with realistic dreams of playing for the Big 12 title. The Vols will show off a little offense, but this will be Will Grier’s national statement in a strong Mountaineer win.
Predicted Line: West Virginia -6.5
May Prediction: West Virginia 31, Tennessee 27
Current Actual Week 1 Line: West Virginia -9

Just an FYI, but there is no such thing as "VTU." The school's full name is Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, so an abbreviated form would be either VPI or Va. Tech.

Yes, and that's unfortunate. I have a déjà vu feeling reminding me of the 2008 Fiesta Bowl. A bowl win makes it seem everything is okay for a while, until the reality that you'll have the same mediocre coach next season sinks in.

WVU's main focus need to be making itself desirable to the ACC or the B1G, since the Big 12 will not exist within 10 years. We need to become AAU members to get into the B1G. Any team in a Power Four conference would be foolish to join the Big 12, and any "Group of Five" member should join only with a goal of parlaying Big 12 membership into a Power Four invitation.

Dana is listed as a candidate for the now-vacant Miami job.

I've thought all along that this year's play-off would be the Big 12's test-balloon. If it got a team in, despite not having a conference championship game, then there would not be an impetus to expand (or have a championship game, if the NCAA allows one with fewer than 12 teams). If TCU and Baylor are both on the outside looking in, it will be interesting to see how the Big 12 reacts. Conversely, such an outcome could ramp up the pressure to go to an eight-team play-off.

An Oklahoma sports writer has picked us to beat OSU 31-20, possibly win the B12.

If Florida hires from the B12, the most likely candidate is Bob Stoops. Stoops has been in Norman since '99, and even successful coaches can wear out their welcomes. Stoops might relish the opportunity for a fresh start, and he has a history at UF, a school that he knows can potentially get better talent that OU.

The teams ranked above us that I have the biggest beef with are East Carolina and Minnesota. What good team has either beaten? ECU's claim to fame is that it beat VPI in Blacksburg, a win that looks less impressive each week, and that it rang up 70 on a UNC team that was playing very poorly at the time. The so-called "good loss" to South Carolina has also proven to be fool's gold. Minnesota has a nice 6-1 record, but its "best" win is against a weak Michigan team that's going to be coach-hunting after the annual beat-down at the hands of Ohio State--if not before. And of course, when they played a good B12 team, TCU, Minny got hammered. The problem is that once a team gets ranked, it's hard to remove it from the rankings if it keeps winning, so ECU may be in the top-25 all year. Being ranked is important, because it brings added exposure and status.
