In that series, WVU pitchers gave up 24 walks in 25 innings.

WVU defeated TCU 4-3 at TCU, breaking their 6-game win streak, despite stranding on the order of 14 baserunners. WVU had 14 hits and 4 walks, and TCU made 4 errors.

WVU up 13-2 going into the bottom of the 5th at Kansas. In the top, with bases loaded and 3-2 count, the Kansas pitcher threw ball four, but the ump called it a strike after a long delay. The batter already had 4 RBIs in the game.

Harris started for Michigan State, which isn't bad. I imagine he must have started playing defense.

Yep, I think its 50/50 he leaves, could be lottery pick next season, or certainly could go 2nd round this season.
Obviously, you go 1st round then the NBA team, will give you at least two seasons to show you can play. Second round pick and you are expendable, they can bury you in D league and really never give you a chance for big minutes.

I wonder what the factors are:
i. training. In D league there would be more time for basketball than in college. How would the coaches compare? How would in-game minutes compare? How important is game time vs practice time?
ii. Money. A 1st-round draft pick makes lots more money than someone in D/G league -- Millions vs around $50,000. The issue is what a G-league player would make if he made the NBA the next year. Under the collective bargaining agreement, rookies make between $15 M and $3 M (for two years), depending on draft position. New NBA players (0-years experience) make a minimum of 800,000 (for one year).
iii. life outside basketball.

A highly-recruited Michigan transfer sat out last year and will play this year. WVU has yet another transfer, who was offered by Connecticut but went elsewhere -- perhaps Ohio State. I don't know if she can play immediately. Also, WVU gets back its all American, who sat out the season with a foot injury. But, WVU lost a whole bunch of seniors.

I biked thru Kansas 40 years ago. Flat is nice when you're bicycling. Also, the people were very very nice. Most towns let you camp by the town pool, and many people let you camp in their back yard.

Especially since the preseason practice game against Purdue was a double-digit loss and the first regular season game against A&M was a blow-out loss.

Hats off to Dax and JC. They were outstanding representatives of WVU and the bball program. They had stellar careers and truly represent what collegiate athletics are supposed to be about. Love those guys.

+1

Same for the team as a whole. For the most part, everyone played hard. The team reached 2nd in ranking at one point, the best since Jerry West. A few more shots going in, or a few less fouls early in the 2nd half and they might have won.

Too bad about about KY. WVU always plays them in the NCAA, so I thought they'd meet in the finals :)

Here's a link to an article about concussions. In baseball, at least, it takes several weeks to return to form, even after you've returned. Unclear when someone returns:

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/03/16/spo ... t-frazier-concussion.html

What is important is not pushing too far or easing off too much.

“It’s a brain injury; it takes awhile to recover,”

Research is indicating that even when players return from a concussion, their performance lags in the weeks upon their return.

Wasserman found that batting average dropped 31 points, slugging percentage declined 62 points and on-base-plus-slugging percentage fell by 99 points in the first two weeks upon players’ returns from concussions. Performance was still lower four to six weeks after returning, but not significantly so, Wasserman said.

Marshall is trying to hard or playing too fast -- lots of missed open shots, lots of silly turnovers. Maybe they're TOO up for the game.

Sorry, meant to say Sunday.

Saw a bit of Cary's post-game comments. I thought he looked totally bored. Perhaps he's thinking about what could have been if everyone had been healthy -- they'd have been a top-10 or perhaps even top-5 team. But, they lost their all-American candidate in preseason.

The leading power indices have WVU as favorites to win the first two games.

Sagarin:

9 West Virginia = 89.97
Murray State = 78.70
Wichita State = 87.91

KenPom
13 West Virginia +21.82
60 Murray St. +12.77
20 Wichita St. +20.05

For Sagarin, the difference in index is the expected difference in score. For KenPom, I believe the index is per 100 possessions, so multiplying by .7 should give a reasonable prediction.

We'll have to beat Texas Tech in the regional final to get to the final 4. It'll be tough to beat them 3 times this year.
