I am excited to see what Derek Culver can do. I read somewhere that he grew 2" in prep school this year. So that would make him 6'10". I would really like to see him and Sags on the floor at the same time. I have a feeling that Esa leaves although I would love to see him stay.

Eery- I kinda agree but, I’m thinking his performance, in the bowl game, was more on the coaches than he. I just don’t think our coaching staff has the ability or imagination to adapt to our players strengths.

I agree that it's more on the coaching staff than Chugs. Not so much in getting a game plan for him, but for the fact they recruited him to begin with. I may be wrong, but I don't think he had any other FBS offers?

I like what Dana has been doing and the direction of the program. But the inability to recruit, other through transfers, a decent FBS caliber QB is an obvious issue. Millard, Chugs, Childress all are scrub qbs at the FBS level. That QB from Liberty when we played them a few years back was waaayyy better than those three.

I will completely agree with your opinion on "inability to recruit" however; a good coaching staff adapt to the players strengths and calling plays accordingly. For example - how did VT start a freshman but, made him look like a red shirt senior? I am not even going to answer that. Then there is our coaching staff who has Chugs throw 45 yard passes when he can't hit a mini van at 40. So, lets have him instead throw what he can. Play to his strengths, not his weaknesses. It is pretty simple, while Chugs was in high school he had someones eye and had to have some ability or he wouldn't have been recruited, right? Or is it, he didn't have much in abilities and our coaching staff is way worse than anyone knows.

I'm no football coach but, I can surely see what works and what doesn't, when you find something that works stick with it until it is no longer effective. As I saw it we kept on calling the same plays that did not work but, we continued. This all lies at the feet of our coaches. Matter of fact - this is similar to how our previous coaching staff tried to make Pat White a pocket passer.

Cody Saunders should have been the backup this past season, but unfortunately he had a health issue after spring practice that forced his retirement from football. I really would have liked to see him play. He looked really good in the spring game two years ago before his redshirt year.

Well with Knapper and Esa coming back, we shall soon have enough depth to play more press.

I thought Knapper was done for the year. I wouldn't think a meniscus would cost the season. I just figured they didn't want to burn a redshirt for half a season. Don't get me wrong, I would love to see him out there.

This team needs about 3-4 special players who are healthy on each side of the ball to be outstanding. The other pieces of the puzzle are pretty close.

Grier is one.

Not sure we have that at RB.

Long was one. It seems we have quality in the pipeline. We need a Bruuuuce and a Pac Man or something close.

Unless we change coaches, the next 3 years or so are going to be very good years for us given our recruiting upswing and what is there now. Spavital/Holgy will only improve. Wickline will get the line going. Gibby will get these kids up to snuff. They are puppies.

Next year should be a 9 or 10 win year. If we develop a high quality replacement for Grier, we will continue to be in the 9-10 win range for the next couple years after that, in my opnion, with chances of being even better each and every year.

Our fan base might be the most delusioanal, fragile, chicken little, bunch of Sunday morning QB expert, blame the coach, why does the student section show up late, group I have ever seen. I don't mean only on here, I mean in my neighborhood, at the office, at the diner, in every chat room. Zero long game, zero big picture, only instant gratification bitch and moan bitch and moan. We will be the best team ever (despite all evidence to the contrary), wait we are average, kill everyone! That is Mountaineer Nation.

If Holgy gets run out on a Bobby Bowden rail, we will be truly fucked for years to come. The massive adjustment to the B12 is now leveling off. The one year Holgy contract making it hard to recruit period is over and the skies are now blue. Everyone just needs to sit back, pour a cold one, and keep their tailgating alcohol tolerance in tip top shape for next year.

There you go making sense. You can't be a Mountaineer fan.

We definitely need D-linemen. For the 3-3-5 to function the nose guard has to be a pit bull with an attitude and a Miller and Ervin at DE; otherwise, it is not effective, as proven in the OU game. IMO, the defensive line is the weakest area of this team, so the recruiting should be totally focus on reinforcing those positions.
I thought McDougle did a pretty good job at the nose for a True Freshman. He is only going to get better, I am hoping Dante Stills will be a beast. I agree with the Dude, we are building something special here.

I'd love to have the deep threat, don't get me wrong, but if our other guys can run routes and get separation, and Grier is as accurate as advertised, and our offensive line gels, and our backs don't get hurt...we should be fine.

2 weeks to go!

That is an awful lot of ifs...but I'm with you.

There backs are unproven as well. They lost last years starter to graduation. Serious Chokie fans I work with are worried and don't think they can win the game.

I need some help from those who have experience going to games at VT. I will be there rooting for their opponent if it helps (My girl's team).

Any recommendations on places to stay that are close enough to make travel easy but outside of town enough to avoid paying a ton for a hotel? Really, any advice regarding things that I'd have to do while there or that I should see would be appreciated.

Thanks all.

I live in Salem, VA about 30 minutes from VT. There are some small motels around here you could check. Or as Southie suggested Bluefield or Princeton. Princeton is about an hour down 460 from VT.

I think I may start a forum here on how to do stuff over there!

I had my avatar saved on my laptop, so I just uploaded it on my profile. It was already the correct size I guess.

This is the only Mountaineer board I have ever been on, but I just signed up for TMN. I don't live in Bama anymore so I changed my username there. I wish I could change my username here.

Grier transfers in from Florida last year, and this year we get 2 transfers from Miami and one from Bama. I'd think potential recruits might take note of that, in a good way.

If Malik Zaire, the graduate transfer from ND fails at UF and they stumble offensively, and Grier is as successful as we're all hoping and praying he will be, I guarantee there will be whiny articles all across Gator country.

This would be awesome!

I would like to say 14-0, but I think 9-3 is a more realistic possibility. I do think we squeak by VPI and start the season 7-0, but I think we lose a heart breaker again to Okie Light and can't get over the hump in Norman. KSU or Texas will be the third loss. I think we do win a bowl game and finish with 10 wins.

He is 6-5 and seems to make good reads. I am sure that someone at Miami worked on his mechanics and Coach Spavital has a year, hopefully two to work with him.

I like this kid, too. I was looking forward to him getting his shot. Obviously his health is most important. Maybe coaching will be in his future.
