Fairmont Times-WV:

And what happens if Chugunov goes down?

The backup quarterback in this game will be junior college transfer David Israel, who had been redshirted since coming to school.

He’s a totally different package than Grier and Chugunov, more active with his feet while his throwing is nowhere nearly as precise or as strong.

“We have been player developing him through a lot of different things,” Spavital explained. “We’ve been sending him to inside drills, to 7-on-7 drills. We do Thursday night football with him for this entire year.

“He’s well acquainted with what we’re trying to accomplish. We feel confident we can put a package together for him that he can run if it comes to that.”

And when he is out there it will be a different offense.

“He’s different than Chugs. He can run around; he’s more mobile. He has to use that to his advantage. In his junior college days he made a lot of plays on the run,” Spavital said.

And if he were to be hurt?

David Sills V would return to his original position with a package designed for his skills.

Chugs is our qb and I support his opportunity to lead yes. He is getting a full week of ones plus what ever else the coaches can squeeze in. This was a 20% game to begin with. So all or nothing and let the game fall where it may. Chugs may suprise.

On another note, is there any word on Grier's recovery? Is he definitely out for the bowl game as well?

Recovery is 4 to 6 weeks.. puts him right up to bowl time...Thought is if he falls on it could re-damage or do more damage... Coach speak is always "game time decision". As a fan I want him NOT to play. I would say it is unlikely.

I'm with you. If it is borderline, which it sounds like it would be, I would say let him sit until next year.

If he could make it back 100%, then yeah lets put him in there, I think it also depends on how Chugs looks vs. OU.

I don't think Chugs will do bad. He's not Will but he'll have a whole week of reps with the first O (and that should help a lot - he was just too slow making reads and throws). Still, we also have to slow down the boomer schooner averaging 45 points per game. If we hold them to 7, we will win.

Fully agree, shut him down, whether he comes back or not. Don't want to rush him back just to have it reaggrevated, it's stupid short term and long term. Let's let Chugs get some reps and figure it out.

I think Chugs will do okay. If this were a home game against someone like ISU with a week to prepare I think he could be good enough. He won’t be on Saturday and to be fair, probably Grier wouldn’t be enough either...hell the Buckeyes couldn’t handle OU at home. As far as the backup...Jack Allison or Lowe will be the heir to Grier, not Israel. Israel’s most likely use is in a package with Allison or Grier next year. And maybe if god forbid Chugs gets hurt he comes in and moves around and shows some promise and plays well in a bowl with a month to prepare. If Grier would leave, and I don’t think he will, he could give some hope at that position with him and Allison and Lowe. We’re going to lose Saturday. Enjoy one of 12/13 days with Mountaineer football all year long. There is no pressure, let’s have fun and try to make them sweat. Who knows maybe we go in down 21-17 at the half and get a pick 6 or something. Just enjoy it, there are very few of these days on the calender

I hope we can keep Grier for one more year. I think Allison will be a good one for us once given his chance. I like the idea of being able to mix in Israel with a wildcat option. Sometimes when we start to stall on offense, it would be nice to be able to mix things up.

Projecting Will Grier as 3rd rounder.

Late third round to the Bills? He would be crazy to go.
If he would be a late third rounder with this short of a resume, imagine how high he would go with another season.

ESPN listed Dana Holgerson as candidate for Florida.
I like Dana, but if he decided to leave, I wouldn't be heart broken. I think he's done a good job building team, especially with this year's recruiting class. But, after watching it for 6 plus years, the Air Raid, is not the way WVU should head. Running game with a dual threat QB, is the way like TCU now. The type of players we bring in just fits this model.

If Dana stays, I'm fine with it too, but I hope he reverts to last years style of play.

There are things I like about DH and things I don't. I've said before and will say again that his worst hire is Spavital. We have returned to the air raid offense and moved away from running the ball. It is evident that the offensive line prefers to pass block and doesn't put forth run blocking. We have good backs, but they cannot run if the holes are not there. DH needs to demote Spavital and resume calling the plays himself, or he needs to dismiss him and hire someone with a much longer and better resume.

I don't think the Florida boosters would be chomping at the bits for Holgorsen, no offense to him, I'm an avid supporter, but he hasn't quite gotten over the hump to be on their shortlist. That being said, I agree, we need to run more, but it doesn't mean completely take away from the Air Raid, we need a mix of that and the Spread kind of like how last year was, Spavital really needs to figure this out, I'm able to predict half of our plays, imagine what an actual defensive coordinator could do.
