I read it to mean that "The defender can then slide forward straddling this pivot leg" is indeed NOT a legal guarding position. It seems pretty clear to me.

If a defensive player straddles an offensive player’s leg in a way that prohibits him from making a normal basketball move — which now includes pivoting — contact that creates a common foul will be called on the defensive player.

I agree, the rule hasn't changed but they're clarifying what the "cylinder" is. It sounds like they're saying the imaginary cylinder encompasses all vertical space from any part of the offensive player, including an extended leg.

That is true now in college. The protective cylinder is now around the players torso and back so when the player is straddling the legs, more than likely they are encroaching on the torso. At least that is the strategy I see employed in high school where it is STILL legal.

I don't think that you will see much change at D-1. The NCAA is issuing this for all of its officials. The VAST majority of NCAA officials are guys doing high school and D-2 and D-3. They are the ones that need this clarification.

It may make some difference in the D-1 game but I doubt much. What bothers me is that I will end up working with guys that will apply this rule at the high school level and I will end up with a disagreement on this play when I explain that the college rule and the high school rule are different. You can't believe the number of times I see that in games. This is especially true with goal tending.

It is official: Kentucky will face WVU at the Coliseum on Jan. 27

Lawd, that is going to be electric.

EDIT:
So here is the updated schedule I have heard:
NJIT
American
Kentucky
Virginia
Texas A&M (in Germany)
@ Pitt

And the early-season tournament that may include: Long Beach State, Marist, Missouri, Nebraska, Oregon State, St. John's, Central Florida.

What a goddamn schedule that is!

So WVU announced five home games yesterday:
American University
Morgan State
Coppin State
Fordham
Long Beach State

That is along with:
Virginia
Kentucky
@ Pitt
Texas A&M (Germany)
AdvoCare Invitational tournament.

I swore I saw an announcement that WVU and NJIT had a game scheduled. Maybe that will be the Charleston game?

Jethro Tshisumpa from Arizona State.

He is a 6-10, 260-pound freshman center who was an ESPN top 100 recruit out of high school.

From the Arizona Republic:

"The 6-10 Tshisumpa played in 26 games with five starts but was suspended for the final six games for a team rules violation. He averaged one point, 1.5 rebounds and 7.4 minutes with 25 total blocks"

I stand corrected. Expected it would come with a statement from Huggins/the athletic department.

Funny ... I thought he already WAS retired and he just came to the games anyway to sit with Huggy because he had nothing better to do.

I fully expect him to still be sitting there next year too.

^ I "believe" that his wife has been recovering(?)from cancer and he wants to spend more time with her. If true, it's fully understandable.

Rumors are ramping up Culver will not make it to campus this year. Does not have the test scores. He will likely prep.

With Culver likely having to prep, the coaching staff has been looking for a player to sign late. They may have found it it John Walker III.

A 6-8, 190-pound forward from Texas, Walker has been getting looks late from Arizona State, South Carolina and Houston. He visited WVU this past weekend.

Huggs talks Culver, Ohio State and Kentucky.

Good read. I found it surprising that Culver could still make it. Hopefully he can get the test score and make it to Morgantown.

FYI...

Found out in church this morning that Nathan Adrian's Dad, Kevin, is awaiting a heart transplant at Allegheny General in Pittsburgh. Thoughts and prayers his way.
