The No. 1 women's soccer team in the country lived up to its ranking Friday afternoon as WVU knocked off No. 5 Georgetown, 1-0, in Washington, D.C.

Senior forward Michaela Abam scored the game’s only goal in the 11th minute and sophomore goalkeeper Rylee Foster came away with seven saves.

Georgetown was the only team to beat WVU last year prior to the national championship game.

A very good start to what I hope is another great year!

Tough game. A WVU player went down with cramps around halfway thru the 2nd overtime. The refs failed to halt play, and Virginia eventually got a free kick and a goal in the ensuing melee.

WVU lost to Duke 4-0. Losing a world-class defender is making a big difference.

Yea but they beat State Penn (No. 1 at the time).

Duke must be REALLY good.

WVU scored in the 88th minute to take the lead against Baylor, then give up the tying goal with 30 seconds left when a Baylor player caught up to a very long pass a step or two ahead of the defender and the keeper was a step late getting to the ball. All was well as Z scored on a free kick from just outside the box in overtime. So, in a 2-1 game, all three goals were scored within 8 minutes.

WVU plays at Texas on Sunday. Texas is the only remaining undefeated DI team and is ranked 16th or 17th in one of the polls. WVU is 5th or 6th.

Texas's second successive tie, and third successive double-overtime game, puts WVU in the driver's seat for the Big 12 regular season title. Texas is two points ahead (win is 3, tie is 1) and has played one more game. If WVU can win that extra game, they'd be 1 point ahead of Texas and win the title despite its loss to Texas.

WVU up 2-0 against OU after 19 minutes. If WVU holds the lead, they'll regain 1st place in conference.

Some interesting facts about Big 12 soccer:

WVU leads the conference in goals scored and is tied for first in fewest goals allowed (4 in 8 games). WVU has scored 1 more goal (16 total) than the 2nd place team, but has 6 more assists.

WVU takes a lot more shots than anyone else, 33% more shots than the 2nd place team. Abam has taken almost 50% more shots than the person in 2nd place, but is 2nd in goals scored.

Rylee foster leads the conference in goals against, with 3, but is 10th !!! in the conference in saves per game (because of the skill of the WVU back line and because WVU dominates possession).

WVU is 5th in the conference in attendance. K State is way ahead of everyone else. WVU leads the conference in away attendance – presumably because it’s the best team, and not because there are a lot of WVU fans living at other Big 12 locations.

WVU needs a win at Kansas and an OSU non-win at Texas to win the regular season championship. WVU holding up its end -- up 1 - 0 in the 14th minute. Kansas has only about a 500 record, but defeated two top-ten teams at home. In the other game, OSU is dominating early play, but still 0-0. Texas has only lost once on the season, though, with 2 or 3 ties.

WVU may get 3 home games, then play at #1 Stanford in the 4th round. # 3 seed Penn State in the WVU bracket.

Survived to the round of 8 by defeating Rutgers 0-0 on penalty kicks. The WVU goalie block to Rutgers shots. The winning goal was for WVU was scored by a little-used freshman - gutsy coaching move to put her in at a critical point in the game.
