NW had only allowed 11 goals all year. WVU women scored 4 in the first half.

WVU up 1-0 in the 24th minute of the 3rd round NCAA game. Since WVU has only given up 7 or 8 goals all season (in over 20 games), this is looking pretty good. The other team has 1 shot so far, not on goal.

Tied 1-1. So much for the theory of my previous post.

High-scoring game. WVU had shutouts in about 2/3ds of their games, gave up as much as 2 goals only one or twice all season, and typically surrended 1 shot on goal per game. Here, they gave up 2 goals (one an own-goal) and 11 shots on goal. They scored 5, which is insane this late in the NCAA -- probably comparable to the 70 versus Clemson in football.

An oddity -- the refs called a yellow card on the other team. no idea:
i. what for -- perhaps language?
ii. consequences -- if there are two yellow cards on the team, does a player get removed? If so, how selected?

A single player has to get 2 yellow cards (2 yellow = 1 red) - then that person is off the field and can not be replaced. If 2 different players get a yellow, no on is taken off.

If the keeper were to get 2 yellow or a red, they are taken off the field, replaced with back up keeper and the team then has to select one field player to come off as well.

I went to the game on Sunday. It is a nice cheap alternative to a football game.

There was a lot of excitement in this game.

I understood the yellow card against us early in the game. Our offensive player interfered with the goalie after the goalie secured the ball. So that one was understandable.

I was perplexed about the yellow card against Loyola though. I guess it could have been for saying something but I thought that a simple foul against the girl was sufficient without the yellow card. It was pretty close to midfield and on the side with the stands so if she said something it would have to have been pretty quiet as I didn't hear anything.

I was surprised at the officiating, actually. This was a "Sweet Sixteen" game I thought the officiating was lacking a little. The referee wanted to let them play and she did a pretty good job with the exception of once the side judged waved the offside flag through the ball being kicked out and the referee awarding a corner kick only to later have to give the ball to Loyola. Loyola almost scored on a CLEAR offside play in the first half. I realize that the line official was watching the ball close to the boundary when it was kicked but the offensive player was off sides by more than 10 yards.

I did not think we played a very good defensive game. If we play like this against Penn State we are going to get beat. A number of times we dropped the ball back to the goalie for a kick out and would leave the ball short. The goalie would be at a dead run to beat the offensive player from getting the ball.

They did play a better second half than a first half....

Now thinking about making the trip up to Penn State for this coming Saturday.

That really sucks. I was hoping to see the girls win it all. Aside from that it was fun watching Michigan St beat the hell out of Penn St on the gridiron.

The team WVU lost to, Penn State, won the national championship. We beat them earlier in the season. Too bad we didn't win the BIg 12 tournament -- we'd might have played them at home.

a 16-year-old Canadian scored two goals for their national team in yesterday's Olympic qualifying match against Guyana. It would be wonderful if WVU could recruit her. Two of her teammates play for WVU, and a couple of members of the Canadian junior national team.

Two weekend wins, including a commanding victory against a top 10 opponent, helped push the West Virginia University women’s soccer team up to No. 4 in Monday’s TopDrawerSoccer.com Women’s Top 25 Poll.

The position is the Mountaineers’ (3-0-1) best ranking to date this season. WVU was ranked No. 6 in last week’s TDS.com Poll. The squad has not been as high as No. 4 in any poll since sitting at No. 4 in the Nov. 10, 2015 National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Division I Women’s Rankings.

The Mountaineers stay at home and play host to two Big Ten Conference opponents this weekend. WVU opens the holiday weekend against Purdue at 7 p.m. on Thursday, and concludes its homestand against No. 19 Ohio State at 6 p.m. on Sunday.

All tickets for Thursday’s match are available for $1 each. Tickets for Sunday’s match are $5 for adults, $3 for youths under the age of 13 and $2 for groups of 10 or more. Tickets are available for purchase now at WVUGAME.com.

$1 folks....

It'd be awesome for the local crowd to support a Top 5 WVU team.

This may be their last great year for a while. The two 1st-team Canadian nationals, Buchanan and Lawrence, are both seniors.

WVU defeated 21st ranked OSU at home, 2-1. WVU outshot them 19-4 and OSU had only one shot on goal, but it made. In the 70st minute, with the score 1-0, an OSU player intercepted a pass and went 1 on 1 with the goalie to score. WVU scored on a corner 6 minutes later.

WVU beat Duke 3-1 on the road tonight.

So The ladies have now beaten last season's national runner up (Duke) and tied the defending national champion (Penn State). And in the game against the Nittany Lions, WVU was without two of their top players because they were on the Canadian national team.

This team is special.

They have to have played the hardest schedule in the country so far, they've played what 3 top 10 teams, and like 5 ranked or something???
