Football season is barely over, and basketball season gets serious today with the first conference game of the season. But there are only 245 days until WVU kicks off the next season against Virginia Tech, and its never too early to speculate, prognosticate, and contemplate about next season. And it all starts with Will Grier.

We learned this season that, even though he has evolved in his schemes and play-calling, Dana Holgorsen's offense will only go as far as the QB will take it. I really believe that Holgorsen got the best that he could with the talent that he had. Skyler Howard had enough talent and a lot of grit and determination that helped WVU win 10 games, but it is in those three losses that he (and the team) hit a ceiling. Grit and determination can win games, but when equal grit and determination are expended, talent will win out.

That is where Will Grier comes in. In six games as a freshman at Florida, here are his passing stats: 106-of-161 passes (65.8%) for 1,204 yards, 10 TDs and 3 INTs. He also has wheels, as shown in the embedded video below.

Grier will wear number 7, and he looks a bit like a famous number 7 that played in the NFL and had a bit of success (John Elway). I'm stoked about this kid.

Here are a few facts about Grier that you may not know.

--His dad Chad was his high school coach. Chad Grier was a college QB who did not play a lot (he sat behind Jeff Blake at ECU), but has parlayed his football knowledge into some pretty good high school coaching gigs. He has been the head coach at Davidson Day School near Charlotte, and his teams have won a lot of games. His worst season as a head coach was the most recent season, where his team went 8-3. Not too shabby.

--He's married with a baby daughter Eloise. His wife, Jeanne Marie Grier, is a former Tampa Bay Buccaneer cheerleader. So, he has that going for him.

I can't wait to see this guy play.

The dude has a cannon for an arm and can properly apply some touch when needed. Hurry up next year.

Pretty excited about this as well, I wonder if Smothers takes a Redshirt, we need some more weapons at receiver.

The official decision is July 1, but a lot of rumors that coaches think he's good for Game 1.

Can't wait. But let's not get our hopes too high...cause we've been down this road before.

Well said...maybe we wait and see how things play out before we start comparing a kid whose played 6 college games (4 of those against teams that ended year with losing records) to John Elway...

DH needs to have Chugs, et. al., ready just in case. I suspect he is smart enough to already know this.

I'm optimistic and I'll leave it at that. The players don't seem to react well to addition pressure as we found out when we played Oklahoma and Miami.

I also have a feeling Cody Saunders is going to give Grier a run for his money.

I just noticed all of our QBs are 6'1" and within 6 pounds of each other (206-212).

Smothers red shirted this year. Next year should have.

Gibson Durante White simms smothers sills and then we have two or 3 signees. One is a Juco that is 6'6. Should have a pretty good group

Sorry if this is a double post, I haven't seen it before. Wanted to share. Grier seems to really like it at WVU and is the future for the next couple years. Hope the NCAA allows him to play from the start rather than sitting out the first 7 games in 2017.

I think we we see better play calling by Holgorsen with Grier as the starting QB. His play calling was quite good at other schools with good QBs.

Play execution helps a lot, too.

Happy New Year.

I've been wondering about Saunders. Not so much for the starting position, but if he might work his way into the #2 spot.

I only saw him at the spring game. I thought he looked good and and has plenty of potential. Let's hope he has been paying attention the last year. I have a feeling we will need a good back up as we were very fortunate to have a healthy qb this season.

I watched the highlight clip. I'm definitely excited about what Grier is going to bring to our offense. Here's hoping he gets to start in game one of next season, and that he will stay healthy over the next two seasons.

I hear Grier can hit the field goal post at Milan from fedex field, on the run, at night, blindfolded. Just saying.
