I have done some reading up on the different color of "shirts" for football recruits.

We know what a redshirt is, a player on scholarship who can practice but not play for a year. Players have 5 years to play 4, and that non-playing year is called a redshirt. That one is pretty well known.

A greenshirt is an early enrollee who is on scholarship but enters school in the spring semester to get a jump start on his college career.

A grayshirt is a player who is recruited (officially visited the school or given a letter of intent) that may enroll as a part time student in the fall and then goes full time and on scholarship in the following spring. The scholarship counts for the following year.

A blueshirt is a player who is not officially recruited (no official visit and no letter of intent) who can enroll as a walk on and then go on scholarship the first day of fall camp. The scholarship counts for the following year.

Translated into our situation, any blueshirt player can enroll as a walk on and play right away, though his scholarship will count toward the 2019 class. Any player wanting to blueshirt cannot have been officially recruited. The only players I can see this happening to right now are Angus Davies and Jayce Rogers. I don't think Rogers ever officially visited. Davies won't show up until summer if he does at all.

I think Tavis Lee and Taymon Cooke have both officially visited. That means they will either go on scholarship for 2018 like the others in the class or grayshirt, which means they won't enroll full time until January 2019. If I am wrong about them officially visiting, they can be blueshirt candidates.

So WVU can delay the scholarships for all of them until 2019 if they find three suitable JUCO or transfer candidates. If, per chance, they only find two transfers/JUCOs, they can sign one of them. If they only find one, they can sign both. It really depends on what they find on the transfer market.

As far as I can tell, grad transfers count toward the 25 limit too. Right now, WVU has 78 scholarship players either signed or enrolled for 2018. It seems to me the best way to get to the 85 limit would be to sign 3 more transfers and/or JUCOs, and gray/blue shirt Rogers, Lee, Cooke, and Davies. I hope that clears some things up.

There is a pretty cool website out there, https://gradtransfertracker.com, that keeps a running list of both potential and committed grad transfers. If you go there, the pickings for potential transfers at the moment are pretty slim. Most of the available grad transfers don't look like good fits for us for fall. There are a couple of exceptions, but the list is pretty sparse. Again, we might already be who we are in the fall for the most part.

But, there might be a new wave of them after spring practices. We will see.

Good to address some CB depth, he was primarily a back up for UCLA which wasn't that great of a team, but a 3* coming out of high school, looks to provide some immediate help in that department, that's so far, lacking.

good news, lets pick up one more CB, the Clemson DE, and a linebacker with Ferns going down. Hell, with the spots we have open, lets get as many as we are allowed.

Jameschi,

We can't. With the new rules, we can only sign one more player for the 2018 year. It will likely be a grad transfer DE. It doesn't matter if we are well shy of the 85 overall limit. We can do 25 per year and that is it, unless we blue or gray shirt. That can't start helping until the 2019 recruiting cycle.

So with the horrible news about Saunders, I thought it might be a little positive to look at a potential future Mountaineer quarterback: Woodrow "Trey" Lowe III.

The 6-foot-3, 185-pound gunslinger from Tennessee is apparently pretty high on WVU. He has offers from Illinois, Memphis and Southern Miss but is getting interest from UNC, Mississippi and Vanderbilt. He is set to visit Morgantown soon.

The recruiting sites vary on how they see him: ESPN thinks he is a 4*, 247 says high-end 3* and Rivals has him as a 3*.

What stands out to me: he reminds me of Geno a lot. Here is his HUDL page. He is a little more mobile than Geno. He has good arm strength.

I just went back and watched this kids highlight film.

This kid can play. If he understands the system and makes the right reads, he is going to be good. He has a great delivery and he puts the ball where only the receiver can catch it. I like this kid a lot.

And, as far as running, he looked plenty quick enough, made the right reads on when AND where to run. And when he turned the corner, no one caught him. Not ever. I would say he has plenty of quickness and speed.

Just my two cents.

PS - He IS still committed, ... right???

Yes, last I heard he's playing baseball as well. I watched his highlights as well he may well be the starting QB in 2019. He's a coaches kid and his grandfather played in the nfl so it seems like he's got a very high football IQ.

If nothing else, it may be an interesting competition between him and Allison. Competition is always a good thing.

I think he's talking about the preferred walk on spot for Tavis Lee out of Martinsburg if I'm not mistaken.

Do we have room for him in this class? Or does he count in this class since he's a grad transfer? I know we have roster spots, just don't know if we have recruiting class spots. Love those NCAA rules....

Professeer, what say you? According to earlier posts in the thread, we should be at 25 with the signing of Robinson, if I'm interpreting everything that I'm seeing correctly.

Early enrollees count against the previous year I'm pretty sure. I'm not sure about grad transfers. I would love to know how that all works.

I wouldn't get to excited about our rankings. Currently we are number 18 but, just look who we are ahead of and then look at the number of slots they have to fill.
When all is said and done I'll be surprised if we have a top 30 class.

As of right now - our ranking is 31. Ho hum.

So we have ended up 35.

Grad transfers not included, I don't believe.
