So, no actual college experience and going to be in his first start. Could help neutralize the defenses' weakness a bit.

Look what Gibbys defense did to Shane Bueshele last year. That's what he has to look forward to.

Two things from the picture of him in the article:

1. Look how is holding the ball? Kinda weird.

2. I expect that Gibby will dial up a few blitzes that will turn that smile into a look of confusion and fear.

I think the main reason to be optimistic on the opener and the season in general, barring injuries, is that when you look at the 22 starters, and some backups, you see a team with alot of guys who can play at the next level, to me its prob. at a greater level than most Big 12 teams this year. Even the kicker is seen as NFL material. Can't think of a year since 2007 when you had this much talent on both sides.
Offense:
1. Grier
2. Crawford, Maybe later rounder
3. McCoy, See him as lead back in 18.
4. Cajuste
5. Bosche, not drafter but signed as possible free agent.
6. Ka'Ruan White
7. Durante, (if he comes back this season),
8. Colton McKivitz

Defense:
1. Kyzir White, Could see him as a first rounder.
2. Dravon Henry
3. David Long
4. Adam Shuler, Could see him leaving after junior year.
5. Derek Pitts Not starter
6. Brendan Ferns (Not starting, but will get alot of playing time)
7. Reese Donahue, Could see him become a more dominant player by Senior year.

Kicker Billy Kinney, rated as a kicker who will play at next level.
Alot of solid players like, Pettaway, Jennings, Benton, etc, who might not have talent for next level but are very good players.

Vegas has WVU as a 4.5 point underdog. I am optimistic as always for my Mountaineers, but another piss poor performance like vs. Miami and we get beat. Miami won the 2016 Russell Athletic Bowl against West Virginia in Orlando, 31-14. I hope I am wrong but VT 42 WVU 31 is my prediction.

You think Va Tech is going to score 42 points ... with a brand new QB ... that has never seen our defense before???

All I can say is ... you BETTER be wrong ... or we may not win a SINGLE game.

I just saw a VT article talking about how losing Simms is going to hurt us badly and how great they were ranked #17th nationally against the pass last year.

So I did some digging....I'm even more encouraged now than before. My comment:

This "#17 against the pass" rating is bogus. You held Liberty, BC, Duke, UVA and triple-option GT (and UNC in a hurricane) to low passing totals (<150 yards), hardly the measure of a highly ranked DB unit.

Tennessee put up 45 points only completing 10 passes on you last year, lol.
ECU lit you up for 362 yards through the air.
Syracuse put over 400 yards on you...
Miami had over 300 yards passing...
Pitt put up over 400 yards through the air...

Grier, Crawford, McKoy, Sills, Jennings, and White are gonna expose it soon enough.

I just can't see how VT is a 4+ point favorite with a QB that has never played a college football game. Grier played good SEC competition and won. And the fact that he has to completely understand the 3-3-5 defense as a freshman. I don't know much about VT but that is a large hurtle to jump. Plus Gibby has a lot of time to prepare with multiple blitzes. Do they have a really good O-line and running back?

There backs are unproven as well. They lost last years starter to graduation. Serious Chokie fans I work with are worried and don't think they can win the game.

I agree. I have some friends who are big time tech fans and they are flabbergasted at how they are favorites and will be shocked if they win. They have a very limited offense. If we score 24 we will win barring a special teams meltdown, which is always possible with us. We would have to play Miami-level bad to lose and I can't see that happening in the opener.

37-24 us
