I disagree, we are not at the point of contending to even be considered for playoffs, let alone winning Big 12. Why play a strong schedule to finish 7-5 or .500 in conference play. You follow Baylor's model that Art Briles used, play weaker teams till you can compete to win a Big 12 conference first. Just like how Bob Huggins rebuilt WVU basketball, with weaker schedules in 2014,and 2015.
I really don't think anyone views Big 12 as weakest as far as football play is concerned, yes I do feel there is bias toward SEC teams but you have to admit they do have the most blue blood teams. No matter what Texas and OU will most likely be in playoffs with 1 loss, they are bluebloods, other teams like us or TCU with 1 loss will most likely need a stronger schedule though not always as seen with Washington getting in last year.

Until we prove that we can beat strong OOC opponents, I don't like our chances.

If we have a good team, we'll beat the Tennessee's and the NC State's of the world, if we don't then we will not. I'd rather play next year's schedule, or one like it, every year. It is great exposure for the school by playing household name teams for recruiting and it gives the fans games to look forward to.

When was the last time someone made it through the season from the B12 undefeated?

If you are gonna lose a game during the season to Texas or OSU and argue you should be top 4, then you better have some decent wins against some OOC's other than the Sisters of the Poor and Marshall. You better be able to say, well we beat Tennessee and NC State, we didn't have a pussy schedule. Nope, we have 11 great wins, a tune up game win and a loss to Texas. We should be in the playoff.

I think the braintrust in Morgantown has it right.

I agree.

Imagine if our bounce back game this year (after losing to Tech) would have been BEATING Tennessee instead of East Carolina. It would have meant a hell of a lot more, and we would have jumped right back up the rankings.

Here's the thing. The not so great program playing a strong schedule to get better strategy has been proven to work. I go back to the Bobby Bowden FSU story once again. That was not a good program. But, Bowden's "we will play anyone, anywhere" strategy worked to build that program to what it is now.

One more thing, playing a tough schedule will also prove our coaches to either be worth their money or not.
Playing cupcakes so that we can get a couple more wins to end up 8-4 or 7-5, only to end up in a middle tier bowl year after year is not going to help us. Then getting that occasional 10-2 season is just enough to give a coach enough fodder to justify his job. A tough schedule will allow the powers that be to see truly what our coaches can do in a trial by fire situation. They will either succeed, or fail miserably and force our AD to make the needed changes.
The only downside to a tough schedule is that we may go through some hard times. We may not make a bowl, or might end up 6-6 and go to some toilet bowl somewhere. But isn't that where we already are? Aside from padding our win total with a couple of FCS schools, aren't we at that point already. Heck, we are going into a bowl against Utah, and we are the underdogs! And Utah is having a subpar year.
I say we bite the bullet, suffer a couple of seasons, but get stronger by playing the tough schedule.

Yea but we are without the key to our offense and the guy we would have to lean on to cover is not going to play. Oh and we are missing our best while maker

We finished the Big East days strong, especially in the BCS era. Few teams can boast of a 3-0 record there, and that's 3-0 against teams that are ALL in this year's playoff. We beat the SEC champ the last time Georgia was good, the perennial Big12 champ, and a smug ACC champ in the worst BCS defeat ever. In fact, I'm not sure the entire ACC has three BCS wins. It's been a little bumpy since but the level of competition is consistently higher than what we used to face and Dana's recruiting is finally hitting stride. We have always punched above our weight and I see no reason to think that's going to change anytime soon.

States with our population and resources are mostly fielding FCS teams.

The Texas Tech defense should be left at the stadium and walk back to the campus. The little 12 strikes again

IDK, I wouldn't call a 38-34 loss an embarrassment to the conference. TT wasn't much this year, barely becoming bowl eligible at 6-6 and USF had a special team by mid-major standards. Additionally, that USF QB Flowers is kind of a phenom. Honesty compels me say that I don't know that we would have done any better.

Texas Tech finished 8th in the conference. Any other conference send 80% of their teams to bowls?

"Can`t wait for next year" if we could only draw a face for that slogan we could have a new mascot.
