Everyone is on the Nova wagon. 77%

Not tonight. Tonight the Mountaineers put the Nova wagon into the wall. Tonight you don't wanna be anywhere near the Nova wagon.

Rubbin's racin.

Got my lucky WVU shirt on today that carried us to the final 4 back in 2010. I got this shirt at a football tailgate in Morgantown during the season opener when Villanova football came to town. It's also signed by some of the 2011-2012 WVU basketball team. When we win tonight, you can thank the lucky shirt.

SI Prediction Nova by 7

East Region: No. 5 West Virginia vs. No. 1 Villanova

Friday, 7:37 p.m., TBS

West Virginia-Villanova is the most intriguing matchup of the Sweet 16 round, and the battle between Jevon Carter and Jalen Brunson shapes up the best individual matchup of the weekend’s first two days of games. There’s little doubt that the Wildcats can handle the Mountaineers’ press. They rank 11th in the country in turnover rate, and Brunson is one of the most sure-handed point guards in the country. As great as he has been, though, it might be Mikal Bridges who gives the Mountaineers the most trouble. Put simply, it’s hard to see either Wesley Harris or Esa Ahamd as an effective primary defender against the future lottery pick.

West Virginia has one of the best team defenses in the country, but once Villanova gets into its sets, it has the weapons to attack the Mountaineers’ half-court defense. Bob Huggins’s team may make its name on the defensive end of the floor, but realistically, it can’t hope to shut down Villanova’s offense. If West Virginia is going to pull off the upset, Carter will have to once again show why he’s arguably the best two-way guard in the country.

ATHLFinal Analysis
While the path to the Final Four for both Villanova and West Virginia isn’t as easy as others in the bracket, both sides are playing extremely well and have a good chance to make it to San Antonio given the firepower they bring to this matchup. Whichever side manages to control the pace will have the upper hand and it would surprise nobody if this is a close, back-and-forth game that comes down to who is making 3-pointers in the final minutes and sealing things off at the charity stripe.

The Wildcats have only lost four times all season and are the better shooting team from the perimeter so they get the edge in this one but it won’t be easy at all against a tough-minded Bob Huggins team. The winner moves on to see either Purdue or Texas Tech and probably will wind up as one of the trendy picks to take home the title down the road as well.

Prediction: Villanova 69, West Virginia 64

One thing I've come to realize about this press since we've run it, you can't really predict how a team will react to it

Sometimes you think, "no way this team handles the press" and they end up smoking us

Other times, you think "boy there's no way we can press these guys" and they fall apart.

It's going to come down to whoever hits their shots, a classic Huggybear cliche, but true

WVU is either going to make a lot of people right and a few of us wrong, or they're going to make a lot o people wrong and the few of us right. I have not seen any publication or anyone with a microphone in their face pick WVU in this one. This is a total "WVU against all" type of feeling. If WVU can pull this off I think there will be some shock among those in "the know".

RPI says Nova's best wins are Xavier twice, then Gonzaga, then Tennessee. The rest are teams with RPI's in the 30's and worse.

I put them a notch below Kansas. They are BEATABLE.

Disrupt their offense. Avoid stupid early foul trouble. Be STRONG inside. And shoot well (hit 2's and 3's).

Notice I didn't say make Free Throws. I suspect ALL of the fouls will be called on us.

I just hope our guys can stay sharp from 8 minutes out till close. We had some good teams beat this year till the last 8 minutes or so.

I was wavering on the press, buying into the narrative hat nobody can press Nova and they’ll eat it alive.

Maybe. But has anyone ever tried? They’ve never seen what we’re going to throw at them, and when we really turn it up we are incapacitating. Everyone assumes they’ll be fine, but the truth is we don’t know how they will react till they face it. Maybe they handle it and beat us 90-65. Maybe they can’t and we win 80-65. The assumed reaction to our press is a false narrative
