West Virginia vs. Tennessee
Despite not being all that far apart in the college football matchup world – around 400 miles – this is the first ever meeting. The Jeremy Pruitt era starts out at Tennessee, but this needs to be a big statement from a good West Virginia team with realistic dreams of playing for the Big 12 title. The Vols will show off a little offense, but this will be Will Grier’s national statement in a strong Mountaineer win.
Predicted Line: West Virginia -6.5
May Prediction: West Virginia 31, Tennessee 27
Current Actual Week 1 Line: West Virginia -9

I think that happens most of the year. And when it does, the running game works like crazy, as well. We have good backs.

Tennessee is in worse shape than Texas was when Brown left. If we don't beat them it's going to be a long season.

Beware.

Butch Jones was recruiting well at Tennessee, but for some reason he lost the team and they basically quit.

We won't see the SAME team that lost eight straight in the SEC last year.

We will see a pissed off team ready to prove a point.

I have never liked us in opening games against good teams. We seem to need warm up games. I assume in early season games, player talent plays a premium in the outcome even moreso because the players haven't gotten into a groove with the system yet or with each other. So, I will assume Tennessee has a high level of talent within the program and will be very very tough.

Normally, I would expect us to lay an egg in this situation, but because we have a veteran offense and good skill on offense especially, I think we win. I would expect a close game. If our team is truly going to contend for the B12 title this year, we should win by a couple scores, but just give me the ugliest win in history and I'll be happy to start the season 1-0 with a W against Tennessee.

A Tennessee site expects to lose. They think their defense will take some time to find itself. :

there are a ton of unknowns on the Tennessee defense. Those unknowns certainly won’t be answered by week one, either. The Vols replace four contributors at cornerback and still need a consistent pass rush to emerge. Frankly, the answer to those two question marks might not be on the roster yet.

Tennessee will also be in game one of their new defensive scheme, which will feature a 3-4 base. That defense got ripped in the spring game by Tennessee’s first team offense. Plenty can change through camp, but on the surface this seems like a worst case scenario matchup for Tennessee — at least on one side of the ball.

If we don't win this game by 3 touchdowns you can forget ANYONE saying we are going to be vying for a Big 12 championship. You can further kiss Grier's chance at a heisman goodbye and what a waste making that web site.

This is an experienced WVU offense and what appears to be a solid defense with multiple years in this scheme. We should beat this team easier than we should beat Youngstown State the next week.

Tennessee is a dumpster fire with all new coaches and I am sure all new schemes playing their first game. If we only win by 4 points.....we suck!

I think we handle this game easily.

If we can jump on them early and just get a couple stops, maybe a turnover and then force them to pass we win by more than ten. If they're able to pound the run and not turn it over and eat clock, it's gonna be tough.

Been a fan since the WVU-Utah Bowl game in...Atlantic City. Still pullin' splinters out of my ass from Old Mountaineer Field watching Cignetti implode with lime/cement stalactites in the men's bathroom ceiling dripping down.. I love WVU Football and bleed Old Gold and Blue throughout. We need to win the game, even if by one point. Win by points. That's how it's done. Love you folks.

This always seems to be the weakness of the 3-3-5. We started with weak D-line but added some talent and beef since last year. I don't know if it is possible, but I thought I read an article where Gibby was talking about having a package with a 4 man front with the talent we have. That would go a long way to help against a strong run game.

Of course, that might be another BS story like how great McKoy could catch the ball out of the backfield and how the tight end would be used more last year. Never materialized. I hope it is true since we have issues at linebacker and corner.

I think we win this game easily and Grier throws for over 500 yards and 6 TDs. It is going to take Tennessee awhile to get straightened out. This game would be closer if it was later in the season.

I hope I'm wrong, but I think this will be a close game. Too much hype about the offense. I remember the VT game last year and Grier didn't have a very good game. If he is on target then we should win, but, if not, it could be a bad night, or maybe just a poor night. Equally important, the defense will likely impact the game more than the offense. I spend at least 3 nights a week reviewing last year's games and in general think the defense is a problem. I don't see how they improve as much as needed to be above mediocre with the same personnel. Maybe the new players will make the difference; I hope that happens!

I agree that if Will has a bad night, we could struggle, however, we should keep in mind that last year against VT it was his first game in our system and his first game after a 1.5 year plus layoff. Also, if I recall correctly, he had a bad first half and a pretty good second half getting us a lead that we lost or almost winning the game, or both, I forget which.
