The Couch's Response to Mike Wise of the Washington Post
|
This morning, the Washington Post contained an article by Mike Wise mentioning WVU and Maryland's penchant for igniting furniture (mentioning this site by name), previewing the WVU/Maryland game tonight, and squeezing in a few pot shots at West Virginians in the process. Check the link out to read the full article. I emailed Mr. Wise to comment on this story. Here is the text of that email: Dear Mr. Wise, I am the co-owner and head writer of the website you mentioned in your article today, www.wemustignitethiscouch.com. A couple of comments based upon the article: - We appreciate the plug, but really wish you'd refrain from the "Skeeter and Cletus" jokes. If you've ever actually been to Morgantown, you'll find that those sorts of characters don't generally exist in a university atmosphere, despite the sterotypical generalizations made about some parts of the state to the contrary. Yes, West Virginia has some places where sophistication is mostly lacking, but that doesn't make the whole state the Clampets either. - Here's something that the national media hasn't grasped yet about Morgantown and couch fires. We only burn couches after upsets and HUGE wins. A win tonight against Maryland will not set the streets of Morgantown ablaze, as we EXPECT to win the game (by a lot.) Couches are burned in Morgantown after games like the 2003 upset of the #3 Virginia Tech Hokies in Morgantown, a game in which we were 20-point underdogs. Couches are not burned for beating an out-of-conference opponent that isn't nationally ranked, even if it is a rival. (We didn't burn them after Pitt, our biggest rival and conference foe, last year either.) - You said, "How does a young kid like West Virginia sophomore tailback Steve Slaton react when he has fewer holes to run through, when he's not scoring six touchdowns like he did against Louisville last year?" Ask Georgia. Again, thanks for the plug, and feel free to contact me at the above address if you'd ever like to engage in dialogue for an article. Very truly yours, Jude |

Here is a guy who will talk shit about wvu and their fans, and after we kick some turtle ass probably write an article tomorrow about how rudely he was treated at the game last night.
I say we reward Mr. Wise with a CHAW. |

I wrote him a response as well.
------------------------------------------------ Dear Mr. Wise, I am a contributor for the website you mentioned in your WVU-Maryland preview this morning, wemustignitethiscouch.com. Thank you for the publicity and the traffic that your comments will bring to our site. I would like to clear up a few misconceptions regarding your comments about WVU Football and the state of West Virginia. You mentioned that "big-time programs bring down goalposts." In the past, this, in addition to the occasional couch bonfire, was the preferred method of celebration in Morgantown. However, due to some highly-publicized accidents around the country resulting from goalpost destruction, the University has installed breakaway posts that are removed after most wins. Also, students typically do not engage in burning furniture after minor victories. The last time there were major fires was two years ago, after WVU upset Texas Tech to join the Elite 8 in the NCAA Tournament. You also fictionalized "two freshman named Skeeter and Cletus." WVU is home to International students from over 90 countries and has students from every state in the nation. Although it is easy to take cheap shots at an archaic generalization of West Virginia, you should visit Morgantown and learn why bizjournals.com ranked it #1 in its list of "Dreamtowns," and Men's Health ranked the third best small town in America. In closing, I am a WVU graduate and an employee of the District of Columbia. Most of our staff writers are graduates and young professionals, and we enjoy college football and the traditions of our team and city. Feel free to contact me or the site owners for more information. Sincerely, Jason Davis Rockville, MD |

I was raised a hill jack and am proud of it. But what gets me is the mere fact that those that don't understand or have gotten to know mountain people find it easy to generalize them as being ignorant and that they marry their sister. Now don't get me wrong, if Mr. Wise was to show up back home and run his mouth he would probable disappear. It's just sad that some people need to put them selves above others in order to feel good. I'm just glad there was a response that speaks volumes.

Wow, I have read some condescending stuff before, but this guy takes it. I would venture to say the couch is a lot safer than Mr. Wise. He is showing a staggering amount of ignorance about the state and the school, but what can you expect from these people who think that people don't marry relatives in MD?
Note that on this http://www.ncsl.org/programs/cyf/cousins.htm that West Virginia does not allow cousins to marry, but lookee who does...... (smirk) Enough taunts for most of our greatest rivals, I think... 'Nuff said; go 'Eers! |

Just realize that ol' Mikey Wise takes these potshots expecting the wrath in return. Lots of writers enjoy that more than people telling them they enjoy their articles. WVU fans make fun of the Fridge's weight and Md fans jab WVU fans with outdated stereotypes. The world keeps spinning.
BTW, The Fridge is so fat, he has smaller coaches orbiting around him. |

sure the guys a jackass, but...he did his article the same way jude or dan or davis would have (with teams reversed of course) he actually at one point was dangerously close to admonishing praise on the mountaineers:
Quote: There is a reason West Virginia could be unfairly shut out of the BCS title game this season even if the Mountaineers stay undefeated: the Big East. Voters and computers will most likely pick a one-loss Notre Dame or Ohio State team before they reward Rodriguez for routing Cincinnati and South Florida in Morgantown. he did state unfairly and the latter part is the bitter truth of the matter. he can still jump into the cheat river with a buick attatched to his ankles for all i care i believe dan that those smaller coaches are called moons...i heard friedgen was dismissed as a new planet on a last second reversal. |

Dan, I think everyone makes fun of the Fridge's weight; he is the only man who requires a commercial license plate to walk down the street or needs to live in a town zoned for livestock.
As for the rest, I just find it humorous with places like MD or VA make fun of WV as inbred trailer park dwellers, when: a. All fifty states have trailer parks, and b. Of the three states mentioned above, only one made inbreeding illegal. It wasn't MD or VA. |

This guy just looks like an arrogant, useless jackass. Yes he's probably right..he should probably never set foor in THE STATE OF WV much less WVU. Someone should CHAW this bastard up.
Hmm I'm going to think a while and send him a rather nice email (yeah right). I think I like this guy less than Suck Landon. |
